Here's the complete first (only?) appearance of this classic Clark Ashton Smith interplanetary short from the August 1931 issue of Weird Tales.

  3. I believe the Weird Tales name is owned now by Viacom, so you might want to be careful putting these online:

  4. Thanks for the scans.

Poor Clark. I bet he had all of 16 Hours to write that story.

"And it's gotta have a spaceship."

    "A spaceship?"

"Yeah. And...they gotta go somewhere interesting."

    "Venus?"

"Super! Now crank it out me boyo."

  5. @Scott: I'll wait till they send me a cease-and-desist so I can print it out and frame it. I'm not sure they have a leg to stand on considering that all of Smith's stuff is now in the public domain. :-)

@Timeshadows: Word-count-wise this is a pretty slim CAS tale. I wonder if he had originally planned to expand on it, then decided to send it along? Thematically it reminds me of the Zothique stuff, esp considering the weird doom that befalls the protagonists.
