Petty Gods: The State of the Project

So this is where we stand:

  • I'm good on gods at the moment.*
  • I've got beaucoup ITEMS and MINIONS. A couple more wouldn't hurt though.
  • I want FOODS. Send your ideas to Matt Schmeer.
  • KNIGHTS will have their own appendix. I'll follow this up with another post soon.
  • I need more artists to take on more assignments! We've got a ton of material that needs some great illos.
  • What do you guys think about the PLACES OF POWER concept?

*I'm expecting a slew of more entries before the May 31st deadline, but I may issue a challenge or two soon. (Challenges are like conceptual sketches that writers can flesh out and make their own thing.)

  1. I am emailing you a pic, of my petty god, Boden God of the Soil. If you dig it, I can offer to do some more art for other things you need. While I am not the greatest, I think I can handle one or two projects.

    1. It's completely awesome!

The problem that I'm running into is that I don't know who is going to illustrate their own deity. I sent Boden out to be be illustrated this week. I know that a lot of you guys are writer/illustrators -- it's just hard to keep everybody straight.

    2. Perhaps the best way to handle it is to have folks who won't be handling their own art submit an art order giving a rough description of what they are looking for with regards to their entry. If they will be supplying their own art, they don't need to supply an art order.

    3. Huh, I'm fine with any interprention of material as long there is honest effort.

It would be pretty funny to start making demands. "No, no you art schoold reject I wanted him to wear pig faced bascinet and wielding a bec de corbin not a teutonic knights helmet and a lucerne hammer, this is the most terrible thing ever, draw it again."

    1. I agree with Carlson and ERIC! with regard to art orders.
That sounds like a solid idea.

  3. Mind you, with regards to art orders, a writer has to understand that this is a collaborative and, more importantly, joint creative effort between them and the artist, and any art order should be seen as guidelines more than detailed instructions. Both writer and artist are bringing their specific creative talents to bear on each entry, and each will see things a bit differently. As an example, the art for Aþ in the original Petty Gods is not as I'd envisioned when I wrote the art order. Nevertheless, I think Glen did an excellent job, giving him a more fantasy look than the Anglo-Saxon/Sutton Hoo inspired look I'd originally seen in my head, and I'm proud to see his art attached to my words.

  4. The Non-Arthurian Knights you mentioned the other day? I could see having champions for the various petty gods, sure.

The Places of Power, excellent idea. If you get enough of them it might be worth making a separate thing (and possibly look at Greg Christopher for consistent mapping; he posted one to Google+ yesterday that is really, really good)
