From what I've seen I think they're pretty sincere - but either way it looks hilarious ;)
That sort of speculative analysis using whatever pop media sources that you can shoehorn your theory around, is why I fucking hate my English grad courses.
I once got in argument with a film class teacher over the meaning of a key in a movie.I told him that the key was nothing symbolic as it was literally the key to the freeing of the family's life in the movie.He insisted that there was a metaphorical meaning to it.
I think they are thumbing their noses at people who look WAY too hard for meaning in things that are just plain goofy.-Eli
Meaning is never inherent but always situational; thus Ghostbusters may speak about a higher purpose to somebody and the Bible may be a collection of goofy stories to some other.Although I don't always agree with the currently most popular viewpoint of literary criticism, I totally understand from where they come.
Welcome to academia! Eveything means nothing and nothing means everything and vice versa, etc., as long as you can cleverly defend it in your dissertation!
